Gao Hucheng Met with WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy

Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng met with WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy in Beijing on March 21. The two parties exchanged views on multilateral trading system and pushing forward Doha Round negotiations.

Mr. Gao said that Mr. Lamy, as WTO Director-General, made a positive contribution to safeguarding multilateral trading system and pushing forward Doha Round negotiations. He said that Mr. Lamy visited China on many occasions, and had given objective and fair appraisals on China's economic development and trade policies, and China appreciated on it. 

Mr. Gao said WTO has played an important role in coping with global financial crisis, and it is hard to imagine development of global economy and trade without WTO rules. China firmly supports multilateral trading system represented by WTO, and will continue to push forward Doha Round negotiations. The Agreement on the Early Harvest for Daha Round negotiations is a positive signal, an achievement and continuation of Doha Round negotiations. He stressed that, as a member of the WTO, China will implement a more active opening-up strategy, especially in the service sector, andChina will continue to support and safeguard multilateral trading system. 

Mr. Lamy congratulated Gao Hucheng on becoming Chinese Minister of Commerce. He said that profound changes had taken place in world economy and multilateral trading since he became WTO Director-General, and China is an important engine for it. China has played a positive role in safeguarding multilateral trade system and opposing trade protectionism in WTO and G20, China was also actively involved in supportingto the least developed countries includingsuch programs as Aid for Trade and Promotingthe Development of Cotton Producing African Countries (C4), and has won recognition bymost WTO members.
